TOURING TIPS: What questions should I ask when searching for a Retirement or Assisted Living Community?

  1. Were you greeted promptly and courteously by front desk staff and offered assistance?
  2. As you tour the building, observe staff and resident interactions – Is the staff patient and kind?
  3. Were you greeted by staff as you toured?
  4. Is the building clean and odor free?
  5. Take the time to have a meal – Are the dining hours and food choices flexible?
  6. Will special diets be accommodated such as a pureed diet, sodium free, gluten free, vegetarian?
  7. How many staff members are scheduled throughout the day?
  8. What is the caregiver to resident ratio?
  9. What about obtaining assistance 24 hours per day?
  10. Ask about staff training and credentials – Is there a registered nurse on staff?
  11. Has the staff been given special training in dementia?
  12. Can your loved one truly age in place?
  13. Under what circumstances will your loved one have to leave the community?
  14. Does the community accept very frail seniors or those on hospice or wheelchair bound?
  15. Does the community accommodate residents with late-stage Alzheimer’s disease?
  16. Is there a separate area/floor for residents with late-stage Alzheimer’s disease?
  17. Are there rehabilitation services on-site?
  18. Is there a physician-office on-site?
  19. Ask about transportation to shopping, activities, and doctor’s appointments.
